01
Start with account region
Region is not a decorative setting. It determines which codes are activated, what prices are available and what currency is used within the service.
PlayStation indicates that voucher codes are only redeemable in the same PlayStation Store region as the account. Apple also limits gift cards to the country or region of purchase.
On Steam, the store country is set via Store Country and affects currency, gifts and regional restrictions.
Before purchasing, open your account settings and check the country of the store.
If buying as a gift, ask for the recipient's account region, not their actual location.
Do not assume that changing the interface language will change the region of the store.
The most common mistake: a person buys a code for the country where he is physically located, but the account was created in another country.
02
Understand what exactly you are buying
The same word “top-up” can hide different mechanics: an activation code, a gift card, direct balance transfer, in-game currency or a subscription for a period.
The activation code usually comes by email and requires manual entry. Direct deposit often requires a username, ID or public identifier. Subscription depends on the period, region and platform rules.
| Format | What does the user get? | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Gift card | Code or balance for self-activation | Card region does not match account |
| Activation code | One-time code for the official service | The code is entered on a third-party site |
| Direct top-up | Account balance, currency or subscription | Invalid username, email or ID |
| In-game currency | UC, Robux, Stars or equivalent | Purchase for the wrong account |
03
Check email, username and ID as payment details
In digital goods, the email and username effectively become the shipping address. An error in one character may mean that the letter will go to the wrong place or the top-up will be sent to another user.
For email, it is important to have access to your mailbox right now. For username and ID, it is better to copy the value from the application rather than enter it from memory.
Do not use temporary mail for purchases that may require support.
Save the transaction number until the product is fully activated.
If the service is character sensitive, copy the identifier from the profile.
04
Activate codes only in the official interface
A gift card code or voucher code is actually money in text form. Once transferred to a third party, it often cannot be returned.
The official path depends on the service: Steam offers Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code, Apple - Redeem Gift Card or Code, PlayStation - Redeem Codes in the Store.
Do not send a photo of the code to random chats.
Do not enter the code in the search results at the first link: open the application or service website manually.
Verify the domain before entering the code and payment information.
05
Recognize gift-card scam before losing money
The FTC puts the rule simply: gift cards are for gifts, not payments. If someone asks you to pay a fine, tax, shipping, technical support, or “account unlock” with a gift card, it is almost certainly a scam.
Fraudsters press with urgency and ask you to reveal your PIN or full card code. Normal service doesn't work like that.
Do not buy gift cards at the request of a stranger.
Do not provide the card code to pay a debt, fine, commission or delivery.
If the code has already been sent to the fraudster, contact the card issuer immediately and save the receipt.
